Recently, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel pledged to support Mali in her fight against drug and people smuggling from from the country. This was disclosed during her first visit to Africa. According to Merkel, she discloses that Germany would escalate its support for the agriculture sector as well as making effort to secure the northern base of the Islamist group in the country.

According to the International Organization for Migration, Mali is among the top 10 countries of origin for migrants arriving in Italy this year; smuggling routes for migrants from other parts of West Africa also cross its desert spaces.

However, Ankara has made an agreement with the EU, to return back all refugees who migrated from Aegean to Greece as well as Syrians through illegal means.
