The senate on Tuesday, March 1 moved for riot acts against drug traffickers who use Nigerians for their dirty acts. The senate urged the federal government to restructure and reposition the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to meet the challenges of evasive drug traffickers using Nigerians to traffic drugs. the also urged the Nigerian drug agencies to develop a collaborative approach towards preventing the incidence of drug use and abuse within the country.
The senate mandated an urgent amendment of Section 23 of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria Act to make the sale of prescription pills over the counter a punishable offense punishable by the act. Gbenga Ashafa representing Lagos east senatorial district said young Nigerians were being distracted and derailed by the high prevalence of drug abuse and drug trafficking and have become willing tools for the crime. he added that the International Narcotics Control Board said that Nigeria was a transit point for cocaine from Latin America destined for Europe. Nigeria is said to be topping the list of countries involved in drug trafficking and drug use in West Africa and also the list of drug couriers arrested in Europe in 2011 and 2012 he said.
