Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, an elder statesman is quoted to have said that , former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former maximum ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, made corruption attractive to state governors in the country. He said that it was the two mentioned leader’s policies and actions, that promoted corruption in governance and that many state governors who are today accused of corruption were merely emulating them.
His statement was a reaction to Obasanjo, the former president who slammed state governors for living like emperors, to the detriment of the masses. Braithwaite said, the former president was not saying anything original because when he assumed office in 1999,the military constitution clothed them (governors and president) with immunity against being arrested for criminal misdeeds. This led to many of them looting the treasury and getting away with it scott free. Obasanjo became rich through this structure and so did his henchmen.
