On Tuesday, 17th January 2017, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Trade and Environment under the government of President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia, resigned from their various positions. Their resignation follows the preparation of the regional forces to overthrow the veteran leader unless he steps down by Thursday, 19th January 2017.

“The chiefs of defence staff of West African countries met on Monday to discuss strategies on the best way to get Yahya Jammeh out if he refuses to hand over power,’’ said a Nigerian source.

President Jammeh who has been in power since a 1994 coup and has refused to accept his December 1 defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow, which has made him isolate himself at home and abroad. Consequently, Nigeria and other West Africa nations are prepared to use military intervention to remove him if he remains in office when his presidential mandate runs out.
