The remains of Noela Rukundo lay in a casket during the proceedings at her funeral in Melbourne, Australia, or so everyone thought. She was, in fact, alive and was the last person to make an appearance at her Melbourne home with the most shocking revelation to disclose. After sitting in the car outside the scene for hours, Rukundo finally summed up the courage to confront her husband, Balenga Kalala who, according to her, ordered a team of hitmen to kill her when she travelled to back to her home in Burundi to attend her step-mother’s funeral. Not only did she crash her own funeral, she bravely involved the police and sought help from her pastor and the Kenyan and Belgian embassies to return to Australia.

Why would Kalala want to murder his wife and just how much may his past have affected his decision to commit such an atrocity? Here are 5 crazy facts about Noela Rukundo’s shocking appearance at her own funeral:

Kalala told everyone she had died in a ghastly accident.

Noela’s husband has a disturbing past. He fled a rebel army in Congo that attacked his village, killing his ex-wife and young son before moving to Australia.

It all started a year ago. Rukundo was abducted from a hotel near Bujumbura, Burundi about a year ago. After the hit men released her two days later she began plotting her next move and that led up to the events which unfolded on February 22, 2015 at her funeral at the family home.

The three hit men  who were paid thousands of dollars to kill Rukundo gave her a cellphone, recordings of their phone conversations with Kalala and receipts for the Seven Thousand Australian dollars they allegedly received in payment.

Although Kalala initially denied involvement, he later pleaded guilty. The police secretly recorded him confessing to the crime during a phone conversation with Rukundo. Kalala was sentenced to nine years in prison for incitement to murder.
