Genetical modification of human embryos has been approved in the UK. The UK scientists involved in the research were given the go-ahead by the fertility regulator and this is the very first time, a country has considered the DNA-altering technique in embryos and approved it.
The research work will be led by Dr Kathy Niakan, who has spent a decade researching human development and she said that the research, is to get a better understanding of the genes needed for a human embryo to develop successfully into a healthy baby. She added that they hope to get a deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life and that the experiments will be taking place during theĀ first seven days after fertilisation.
The researchers will be altering genes of donated embryos only. Implantation of the modified embryos into a woman has however been made illegal.
