The Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria has announced the result of the presidential election in 8 of Nigeria’s 36 States and that of the Federal Capital Territory. The confirmed results show the ruling Peoples Democratic Party marginally leading in total number of votes while the main opposition All Progressives Congress have won more states. The INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega has adjourned the announcement of the results to 8pm (GMT+1) in order to allow for more results to arrive from the states.
How they Stand
Most of the results announced thus far have come from swing states, mainly in the South West and North-Central regions. However, the result in Enugu state, a PDP stronghold in the SouthEast has also come in, and was unsurprisingly a landslide victory for the incumbent president. The result in the North-Central state of Nassarawa was however shocking to many who thought it was going to be a swoop for Muhammadu Buhari. Both candidates have gained more than two-third of the votes of every state announced, apart from Enugu where Buhari did not secure up to 5 percent of the total votes. To win A candidate must have at least 25 percents of the total votes cast in not less than 24 states.
