The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) have taken to their Twitter page to claim responsibility for blowing up two of the highest-producing oil wells owned by Chevron Nigeria Limited in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, June 1. Their string of boastful claims on the success of their attacks included taunting the Nigerian military, by posting that they appear to only be effective in harassing innocent Nigerian civilians.

This events marks the third time in the last week that the NDA is launching concentrated attacks on Chevron property in the Niger Delta region, amidst other attacks on other major oil companies in the same area. The NDA’s continuous attacks on the renowned oil company follow their demands for Chevron to refrain from repairing the Valve Platform.

Chevron’s Valve Platform was also bombed by the group who remain bent on removing foreign-owned oil wells from the area, and achieving a separate, sovereign state from Nigeria. Because, according to them, the Nigerian government has neglected the Niger Delta region for the past 50 years.

The militant group recently refused to honour a meeting organised by the Federal Government earlier on in May to negotiate their demands. Instead, the following week, the group went on to threaten to bomb more of Chevron property if their demands continue to be ignored.

In response to the existing threat presented by the NDA, and their refusal to have a sit-down with the Federal Government, the Nigeria Army has stated that it will continue to use force when dealing with the group. This is amidst general concerns that the suggested approach might lead to a armed conflict in the Niger Delta region.
