Thirty-Two (32) people tragically lost their lives last night as a bomb blast tore through a market place in the north-eastern city of Yola, Nigeria. No group has claimed responsibility but suspicion has been cast on the Boko Haram terrorist group which has previously been responsible for bombings in that region. Here are five things we know so far:
• The bomb was detonated at a popular market place in the Jambutu area of the city. Traders in this market sold fruits and vegetables mainly.

• As of this morning, 32 people have been confirmed dead and about 80 injured. However, these numbers could still rise as the market was filled with vendors and passers-by when the blast occurred.

• This incident ends a three-week break since Boko Haram’s last activity which was the bombing of Mosques in Maiduguri, Borno state. Nigerians had hoped that would be the end of a spate of bombings that intensified as President Buhari resumed office.

• The Nigerian Army led an incursion into the Sambisa forest on the 16th of November, believed to be the stronghold of Boko Haram. Last night’s blasts may represent Boko Haram’s new tactics as it appears they are unable to face the Nigerian Army head-on.

• Earlier yesterday, Nigerian officials arrested former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, who was accused of embezzling funds meant to be used in purchasing weapons to aid the Nigerian army in tackling terrorism.

We will have more updates soon.
