Dubbed one of the early contenders for the greatest hashtags of 2016, #YallQaeda originated as the nickname given to armed militiamen in Oregon, United  States, who have taken over a federal building after ‘peaceful’ protests. On January 2, 2016, they occupied the headquarters building at the United States Fish and Wildlife Service‘s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in protest of the pending imprisonment of Harney County, Oregon ranchers Dwight and Steve Hammond. The leader of this movement, Ammon Bundy, took to Facebook calling for ‘freedom loving people” to join them in Harney County Oregon. Shortly after, the militiamen announced they had organized themselves into a new group called Citizens for Constitutional Freedom.

So far all that has been reported is that efforts are being made to find a solution. In an interview with The Associated Press, Beth Anne Steele, an FBI spokeswoman in Portland stated that the agency was aware of the situation at the National Wildlife Refuge. She made no further comment. Also in a recent article by the Guardian, writer,Wajahat Ali points to the fact that if the Oregon militiamen were Muslim or black, they’d probably be dead by now. And despite the perceived gravity of this militia occupation, social media users can‘t seem to miss an opportunity to make a joke.
