The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde, said, during her meeting with the president and his economic team that Nigeria needs to show more flexibility and stronger discipline in the implementation of its fiscal policies. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele were also in attendance.

Lagarde dismissed the speculations that her team had come to negotiate how Nigeria could obtain fresh loans with stringent conditions, noting that Nigeria had no need for loans, but insisted that the administration must work on fiscal discipline.

According to her, the economic agenda of Buhari’s administration was the issue in focus, especially because of the impact any policy somersault would have on the neighboring countries in the West African sub-region. She disclosed that the IMF team will return to the country to scrutinize the 2016 budget before the National Assembly.
