The second edition of Nigeria’s largest tech event, Techplus 2016, with the theme ‘A Connected World’ scheduled to take place from the 21st to 23rd July 2016, commenced on Thursday at the Eko Hotel and Suites. This event is a gathering of people involved in technology at all levels, including gaming, programming and education. This exhibition also serves as a platform for tech enthusiasts to share knowledge and network as well as a marketplace for consumers and businesses.

Here are ten lessons learnt from  speakers, Uneku Atawodi and Oreoluwa Somolu Lesi, at Techplus about education and women in technology

Oreoluwa Somolu Lesi is the Founder and Executive Director of the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (WTEC). She has been empowering young women to engage in technology.

“How can you complain that people are throwing dirt on the road without giving them waste bin?

“Africa’s biggest asset is our people, however, we need to empower SMEs and young people.

“Tech allows you to do things to the best of your ability.

“People need to understand that technology is far more than coding and networking. It has to do with content marketing and advertising.

“Girls needs to know that these women in tech are cool.

“The beauty about tech is that you don’t necessarily need to work in an office. You can get it done in the office or at home.

“Women should know that they can make money from home, handling social media platforms for different companies. There should be platforms that help get jobs for these women.

“Women in tech and other platforms that have to do with women should create more awareness to get women interested in technology.

“We need to move away from teaching technology to applying it.
Interconnectivity is such a big problem.

“Getting everyone to have access to technology will go a long way in solving the problem.”
