It is no longer enough that Teodoro Obiang’ Nguema, of Equatorial Guinea is the longest serving president in the world. He has reportedly promoted his son, ‘Teodorin’ Obiang’ Mangue to the position of the nation’s Vice President. Prior to this recent development, Equatorial Guinea had two VPs – Ignacio Milam Tang (the first VP) and Teodorin, who was made the nation’s second Vice President in charge of National Defence and State Security. However, according to news reports, the position of the second VP has been abolished due to a “new government structure.” This structure has now promoted the president’s son to the position of sole VP, while managing the Defence Ministry in the country as well.

This move is hardly a surprise to many as the country is rife with nepotism. Since the Republic of Equatorial Guinea gained its independence in 1968, the country has been ruled by the Nguema family. Francisco Macias Nguema was elected as the first President. Barely two years after he assumed office, Nguema created a single party system and made himself ‘President for life.’ His reign was branded with mass killings and other human rights abuses. He was overthrown by his nephew and the current president, Teodore Obiang’ Nguema in 1979 and was subsequently executed.

Teodore, when he became the president in 1979, declared a fresh start for the country. However, he seemed determined to hold on to power at all costs. Regarded as the world’s longest-serving President in the world, Teodore has ensured that he won every election the country has ever held, whether by intimidation or fraud. He has been accused of diverting the country’s funds for his personal use and most importantly, enriching and placing his family members in prominent positions.

As for his son, the new Vice President, he has not had a clean record so far. Known for his extravagant lifestyle, he has been accused of corruption and money laundering. In 2014, Teodorin was asked to hand over his $30 million home in Malibu, California, a Gulfstream jet, a Ferrari and dozens of pieces of Michael Jackson memorabilia worth more than $1 million, all bought with money funnelled through offshore bank accounts. This is clear evidence of greed as is common with most sit-tight leaders and their offspring.

Teodore may remain the president of Equatorial Guinea till his death. Even at his passing, he will ensure that his household continues to sit at the helm of power in the country. As Joseph Kraus, a programme and development director indicated, President Teodore is gradually setting his son, Teodorin up to assume presidency.
