There is a general idea that Nigerians don’t care much for art and anyone who thinks of becoming an artist is seen as unserious. Nigeran parents would rather have their kids aspire to be doctors, lawyers or engineers than aspire to be sculptors and painters. But the success of ART X, the growing recognition for hyper-realistic art and perhaps the launch of Nigeria’s first private atelier are changing that narrative.

ART X Lagos opened on November 4 to a crowd of eager art lovers. The mixture of exhibitions, talks, and cultural entertainment appealed to the multitude of attendees. The success of the event was also overwhelming to Tokini Peterside, ART X Lagos founder.

Ventures Africa sat down with her to discuss, among other things, her experience organising ART X Lagos, the state of art in Nigeria and how to improve the art sector.
