The world’s most popular social media website, Facebook went down yesterday for 10 minutes between the hours of 5:30pm BST and unsurprisingly a panic ensued. When users tried to access the site, a message popped up saying “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.”
This is the second time Facebook’s servers have been down this year. In January, the social media site went down for about 30 minutes and people called 911 to complain. Facebook also went down twice in September 2014 for 15 minutes.
Although Facebook has not given any reason for the downtime, some speculate that the site was under attack by hackers. When it happened in January, some suggested that the hacker group Lizard Squad was responsible. However, Facebook came out to rebuff the statement saying that the downtime occurred after it introduced a change that affected its configuration system.
However, Facebook was not the only social media platform to experience downtime this week, as Twitter’s home page went offline on Monday.

Some Twitter users also blamed Pope Francis for breaking Facebook: The highly anticipated visit of the Pope to the United States has been actively discussed on social media. Users have also debated about his stand on Climate change and economic equality.
