Institute of Directors (IoD) has blasted world football governing body FIFA over Qatar scandal saying the position of presidency should abolished.

The UK Sunday Times this week reported that FIFA corruptly awarded Qatar the right to hold World Cup 2022.

However Simon Walker, IOD director general said in a statement that “cushioned by the large amounts of money that flow around world football, and hiding behind its unaccountable and dysfunctional governance structure, FIFA has resisted change for far too long.”

FIFA’s leading sponsors including Nike, Coca-cola, Sony, Hyundai and Visa, this week also joined the call for an investigation into allegations that Qatar bought the 2022 World Cup with millions of dollars-worth of bribe administered by disgraced FIFA vice-president Mohamed bin Hammam.

Qatar’s government has flatly denied reports that the former Qatari official bin Hammam orchestrated a campaign to literally buy support to hold the competition.

And the Qatar 2022 World Cup organising committee in Qatar remains confident of holding on to hosting rights for the tournament despite further allegations over the propriety of the bidding process.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter also launched an astonishing attack on the British media, claiming the allegations of corruption around the Qatar World Cup bid are being driven by ‘racism and discrimination’.
