Kenya’s electoral commission has confirmed Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner of the country’s presidential elections after narrowly edging out main rival, Raila Odinga.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan confirmed the results on Saturday morning, “I therefore declare Uhuru Kenyatta the duly elected president of the Republic of Kenya,”

According to the commission, Kenyatta, son of Kenya’s founding president, secured 50.07 percent of the vote, achieving the 50-percent threshold needed to avoid a second round by nearly 8,400 votes.

However, Kenyatta’s main rival in the election, outgoing Prime Minister Raila Odinga, is expected to challenge the final result in court.

Speaking before the formal announcement, Salim Lone, an adviser to Odinga, said he would concede “because this election was flawed.”

“If Uhuru Kenyatta is announced president-elect then he will move to the courts immediately,” Lone said on behalf of Odinga.
