Attacks in Brussels, Belgium.


Two loud explosions went off at the main airport terminal in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday. This happened a day after authorities had indicated that a new suspect in the terror attacks that rocked Paris on Nov. 13, 2015 had likely fled to the city of Brussels.

Belgium’s public broadcaster reported that several casualties and an unknown number of injuries had occurred from the explosions which went off at departure hall at Brussels Airport.

A firefighter told reporters that 13 people are dead and at least 35 people are injured.

A Belgian news agency also detailed that witnesses had said they heard gunshots and shouts of Arabic at the time of the explosions increasing fears that this may have been an attack inspired by Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists.

About an hour after the explosions at the airport, an explosion is said to have also taken place at Maelbeek metro station in Brussels centre near the European Union (EU) headquarters.

There are now fears of several coordinated attacks across the city and the entire metro system has been shut down.

Belgian Interior Minister, Jan Jambon, made the nation increasingly aware of a likely terror attack in the wake of explosions at the airport, revealing that authorities believed a terrorist attack to be imminent.

The Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel, has posted on Twitter: “We are following the situation minute by minute. The absolute priority is for the victims and people who were at the airport.”

Passengers were told by airport officials to leave their hand luggage on the floor and to continue toward airport exits. Outside, passengers gathered on the tarmac and were guided onto buses to be transported to a crisis centre.

Belgian authorities have closed the metro in the capital of Brussels following the explosions, according to Belgian newspaper Le Soir.


The blasts occurred four days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, suspected of being involved in November’s Paris massacre that left 130 people dead and more than 300 injured.

A witness at the scene said “I could feel the building move. There was also dust and smoke as well…I went towards where the explosion came from and there were people coming out looking very dazed and shocked.

“The thinking here is that it is some kind of terrorist attack – that hasn’t been verified by any of the authorities here at the airport.”

It has been confirmed that it was a suicide attack.

Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron, in relation to the terrorist attack which just rocked the city said : “I am shocked and concerned by the events in Brussels.”

“We will do everything we can to help.”
