Yesterday, Daniel Dada Ayodele, a graduate of Psychology from the University of Lagos joined the list of exceptionally brilliant graduates who have blazed the trail in Nigeria’s educational system graduating with a 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average .

This is is the first time since the establishment of the institution, 54 years ago, that a student of the Department of Psychology would be graduating with a grade point of 5.0. This simply means Ayodele probably scored As in all courses he took during his undergraduate programme, showing an exceptional academic prowess, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello explained.

According to a Unilag student, who chose to remain anonymous, Daniel was a direct entry student, lived outside campus and was popular among his peers for his academic excellence. Fortunately for Daniel, he is currently on internship with Procter & Gamble.

Daniel Dada Ayodele was able to achieve this remarkable feat tagged a “perfect score” by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahmon Bello. But for the millions of other Nigerians and people in different parts of the world, Daniel’s achievements come with mixed feelings.

The history of recognition and compensation is replete with the evidence that people in this part of the world value talent competitions and fashion more than educational achievements despite the enthusiasm that welcomes such news. For example Project Fame pioneered and financed by MTN has a winning prize of N7.5 million with an SUV for the winner. Let’s not forget Olujumoke fairy tale which is still reeling in our minds, especially after she has continued to receive various endorsements and scholarships.

Here’s what some Nigerians had to say:

Do first class degrees count?

And then they poked into his social life…

Whether based on commitment or sheer luck, Nigeria’s Twitter sphere presented the good, bad ugly sides to Daniel Dada Ayodele’s remarkable academic feat. However many opine that things could end a lot differently for Daniel if this success story is given the commendation it truly deserves.
