Telecom firms operating in Nigeria  have been urged to make security their number one priority before they think of making profits. This was said by the President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday during a conference held in Abu Dhabi. Buhari said that all telecom companies must adhere to the set rules and guidelines without any exceptions.
Security has become a major concern especially with insurgents like Boko Haram who use unregistered SIM cards to continue with their violent acts. This has thus led to policies being made, to force all mobile operators to ensure that only registered subscribers have access to their services. Failure to adhere will result in a fine.
Mobile giant MTN, has been fined $3.9 billion in Nigeria  for its failure to disconnect users of unregistered SIM cards. MTN which makes about 37 percent of their revenue from Nigeria launched a challenge over the fine in December, as the fine will affect their cash flows.
