The Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Land Transport, yesterday, expressed their commitment to aid the development of rail transport in Nigeria.
The members of the committees who were at the headquarters of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Ebutemetta, Lagos, yesterday, as part of their oversight functions also had an elaborate tour of the railway facilities, including the Apapa seaport railway. The chairman of the Senate committee, Olugbenga Ashafa, said that in line with the NASS’ responsibility of carrying out its oversight functions, the committees decided to have a tour of the railway infrastructure in Nigeria as a way of doing “on-the-spot research” having received recommendations from the minister of transport and the managing director of the NRC on ways to improve rail transport in the country. He, however, regretted Nigeria’s rather slow pace in railway development, vowing to prompt the NASS to do all it can to aid development of railways.
