The unending turmoil in Libya, is creating a strategic time bomb said the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. He has urged the international community to intensify efforts, to find a lasting solution to the crisis, as he says it will eventually affect both Africa and Europe. Chaos has been ensuing in Libya since the 2011 revolution that topped dictator Moamer Kadhafi. The southern part is ungoverned and has become an arms bazaar, threatening the security of the Sahel region as well as the north African region and beyond. The EU and UN have been backing efforts to form a national unity government in the country, but this has been beset by problems and as such Libya has had two governments and parliaments, with the recognised authorities based in the eastern city of Tobruk and a militia-backed authority in Tripoli since 2014.
Buhari said that the lawlessness in southern Libya was particularly alarming as it was creating a flow of arms affecting Nigeria and other countries. This he says is making the fight against the insurgents of Islamist group Boko Haram, difficult. Boko Haram has to date killed 17 000 people and displaced millions.
