Prof. Isaac Adewole, Nigeria’s health minister, is reported to have said that Nigerians are immune to the Zika virus that is spreading fast in the Americas.
Prof. Isaac Adewole sought to put Nigerians’ minds at ease when he said this statement and he was basing his assertions on a study in the 1970’s which revealed that several Nigerians were immune to the virus at the time. He said that the virus, has been in Nigeria since 1954 and can not do any harm to the citizens, as Nigerians have a developed strong resistance to the virus. It is reported that once a person is infected with Zika virus, they are free from future infections. As much as the healath minister is confident of the immunity of fellow Nigerians extra preacutionary measures need to be taken to prevent the disease. This includes the killing off of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which is now resistant to insecticides and are no longer restricted to biting humans during the day but now bite at night. Adequate steps must be taken to ensure that we all overcome the havoc of the virus.
