The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged the  government  to pay teachers’ salaries that are outstanding with immediate effect, or risk the possibility of peace being disstubed. Mr Obong I.J. Obong, the NUT General Secretary, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja. He said that the state government must own up to their responsibilities and stop pushing their own political agendas at the expense of the Nigerian child.
Obong said that the government must allow reason and morality to prevail so that issues are being dealt with amicably and that practicable steps need to be taken to address all issues at stake, to avoid a prolonged strike and disturbance in the school calendar. He said that the government needed to be reminded of the importance of education and that it should lead as an agent of moral, economic and social change. The government has been given a three week time period during which outstanding salaries must be paid or risk there being a strike.
