The Lassa fever a deadly virus similar to Ebola, which is fast spreading in Nigeria has since August 2015, killed 101 people. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) statistics show that 175 cases had been reported of the the haemorrhagic disease known as Lassa fever and of that 101 have died. Its reported that, 19 states are currently following up contacts, or have suspected cases of the virus. The virus is spread through contact with food or household items contaminated with rats’ urine or faeces or after coming in direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person.
Nigeria has been battling to contain a flare-up of the virus. Deaths from the virus were recorded in the nation’s political capital, Abuja, Lagos, and 14 other states, the NCDC said. The health authorities have given assurance that the virus is under control, but there are fears that the actual scale of the outbreak has been under-reported. The NCDC has distributed large quantities of drugs, including Ribavirin tablets, and bottles of hand sanitizers across the country to tackle the disease.
