Igwe Achese, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), announced that the union was going to resist any attempt by oil companies to retrench workers in the oil and gas sector especially at the NNPC. Achese said that the act of retrenching is not what the current government is about. He said that the government has been talking about job creation and not job losses and as such there was no way people were going to lose jobs that have been created, especially given the current economic challenges faced by the country as a whole.
Achese added that the minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the NNPC Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has assured them that there will be no losses of jobs. He said that the minister said that there will be job security and that his ministry was working on ways of expanding the business of the NNPC to be a profit organization and a world class oil and gas company like Petrobras and Petronas.
