Villarreal face Liverpool and Shakhtar Donetsk take on Sevilla in the Europa League semi-final, following the draw in Nyon on Friday. Jurgen Klopp’s side made it through to the last four following a dramatic 4-3 quarter-final victory over Borussia Dortmund on Thursday night, while Villarreal defeated Sparta Praha, Shakhtar triumphed over Braga and Sevilla knocked out Athletic Club.
The Reds managed to avoid a draw against Sevilla, who have a formidable record in the competition, winning it last season, but will face a tough task against the Yellow Submarines, who currently sit fourth in La Liga following an impressive campaign. Shakhtar, meanwhile, completely dominated Braga in the quarter-final, winning 6-1 on aggregate with wins both home and away. Their reward is a difficult tie against the holders, who needed penalties to defeat domestic rivals Athletic. The semi-final first legs will take place on April 28 at El Madrigal, Villarreal’s home, and the Lviv Arena, where Shakhtar play due to the unsafe conditions caused by the war in eastern Ukraine. The return leg will take place a week later, with the final scheduled for May 18 at St Jakob’s Park in Basel.
