The Ebola crisis was the main topic of discussion for a high-level United Nations panel recently. They said that the World Health Organisations (WHO) emergency response capabilities were lacking and as such will put thousands of lives at risk if they are not change with immediate effect.
The panelists said that this may be the last opportunity the United Nations had to ensure that the World Health Organisation is empowered, to build an effective emergency response capability especially with pandemics like Ebola. It was also said that the high risk of major health crises was being widely underestimated and that the world’s preparedness and capacity to respond is woefully insufficient. A reports said that if the World Health Organization does not successfully reform, the next major pandemic will lead to thousands of deaths, which if correct measures are taken or had been taken would otherwise be preventable.
