President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, on Thursday, flagged-off the Kebbi State Maternal and Child Health week in Kebbi.
Mrs. Buhari’s visit coincided with the World Cancer Day, where she used the occasion to commission the state cancer-screening exercise. Speaking during the launch, the state governor, Abubakar Bagudu, said the Maternal and Child Health week was the first in the state and the first since the commencement of the “Saving One Million Lives Initiative” of the World Bank. The initiative is focused on evidence-based, cost effective interventions that are proven, and addresses the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. The initiative comprises of several components, which will contribute to saving one million maternal and newborn lives. In her remark, Mrs. Buhari harped on the importance of maternal and child healthcare, urging governments to give priority to the issues of health. Mrs. Buhari commissioned the newly upgraded Birnin Yari Primary Health Care center, which is a model for other Primary Health Care centres in the state. She also commissioned the Jega General Hospital in Jega town.
