Islamist militants attacked a United Nations (UN) peacekeeper base in Kidal, northern Mali, leaving three UN peacekeepers dead and 30 others wounded.

Mahamat Saleh Annadif, the Mali representative of the U.N. secretary general, said, in a statement, “Our camp at Kidal was attacked by terrorists early Friday morning. We fought back but three peacekeepers were killed and 30 others injured.”

A Guinean member of the UN force said that the dead soldiers were from his country’s contingent.

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) peace keeping mission was attacked by Islamists with a car bomb.

This attack came a week after at least four assailants and a Malian soldier were killed in an assault on a UN military camp at Timbuktu, making it the second attack on the same base in one month.
