Pistorius was last month found guilty of culpable homicide after he shot girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013. Masipa, the sitting judge, also found the athlete guilty of one charge of negligently discharging a firearm in a crowded restaurant in Johannesburg in January 2013.

The prosecution had proposed at least ten years in prison for Pistorius, while his own lawyers argued that he should serve a three-year community-based sentence, but the the double amputee will now spend five years in a South African prison.

The sentence can however be appealed.
