In what has become a frequent occurrence in South Africa’s mining operations in the past two months, JSE-listed mining company, Tharisa Group, on Thursday said a worker had died at its Voyager processing plant in a routine maintenance incident.

The company said all operations at the Genesis and Voyager plants have been suspended. It is now awaiting a full probe into the death.

In the past two months, JSE-listed gold miner, Harmony Gold, reported a couple of deaths at its mines in South Africa, while platinum miner Royal Bafokeng Platinum miner also recorded a few incidents.

About two months ago, Harmony Gold, said a worker had been found dead at its Doornkop mine after he was unaccounted for when rescue workers found eight dead bodies at the mine. This came after two people were killed at its Kusasalethu mine in the North West and at Joel mine in the Free State. At the time, Gaham Briggs, the CEO of Harmony, said the company had brought families of the dead mineworkers to the facility where they will be given the support “they need at this time.”

Briggs said this will be followed by an intensive probe into the cause of the Doornkop incident, involving representatives of the firm, union members and the health and safety directorate of the Department of Mineral Resources.

In another case, the JSE-listed platinum miner, Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat), recently said a contract employee had been killed at its flagship Bafokeng Barasimone Platinum Mine in South Africa’s North West province.

This was a second fatality at RBPlat operations in as many weeks. A week before that, RBPlat suspended all underground operations at the Styldrift 1 Project pending a full probe into the death of a miner at the weekend.
