Microsoft Corporation announced the appointment of Mariam Abdullahi as its General Manager for sales of mobile device in East Africa. This comes five months after the company acquired Nokia.

According to a statement, Mariam will guide the team in sales and marketing in key markets like Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Tanzania.

Mariam who was previously the head of operator channel for Sub-Saharan Africa at Microsoft, takes over from Bruce Howe who moved to Malaysia to assume a new position within the software maker.

“With the combination of Lumia features, the power of Windows and key Microsoft services, we are very well placed to be a key player in the market,” Ms Abdullahi said in a statement.

The Microsoft Devices Group includes Lumia smartphones and tablets, Nokia mobile phones, Xbox hardware, Surface, Perceptive Pixel products and accessories.

She is expected to strategize on how nokia is going to reclaim a market that it ones dominated but is now dominated by the likes of Apple, Tecno, Huawei and Samsung.
