Marriot International has been expanding its footprints, particularly in Africa, and Ghana will be the latest region to have one of the largest hotel brands in the world. This signifies some success made from the government’s efforts to reform its hospitality sector and attract large hotel chains; and a major plus to the nascent tourism industry of the West African country.

Marriott Hotels, part of Marriott International, has announced its debut in West Africa, with the highly anticipated opening of Accra Marriott Hotel. Owned by African Hospitality Limited, the hotel is strategically located opposite the Kotoka International Airport. Set in the heart of Airport City, a burgeoning urban development, the Accra Marriott Hotel is just a few kilometres outside of the central business district providing easy access to major corporate businesses, government entities and well-known city landmarks.

“We are thrilled to open the Accra Marriott Hotel, a highly anticipated addition to our Africa portfolio and a significant milestone in our journey,” said Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International.

The hotel sector in Ghana has remained resilient despite recent global economic challenges. Following the collapse in the oil price and that of other commodities, President Nana Akufo Addo’s government had taken steps to diversify the economy, including promoting the hospitality and tourism sector.

Ghana’s hospitality industry grew 1.2 percent from 2015 to 2016. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) expects Ghana’s tourism industry to maintain an annual growth rate of 5.1 percent per annum from 2017 through to 2027.
