American singer and songwriter, Madonna Louise Ciccone has flagged off a fundraiser to solidify her work and effort towards children in Malawi. The award-winning singer revealed that the USD 60,000 fundraising will be channelled to her Raising Malawi’s project at Home of Hope orphanage in the rural area of Malawi.

Madonna who will be celebrating her 60th birthday on August 16 announced the fundraising through her official Facebook page and has received overwhelming support from fans.

“For my birthday, I can think of no better gift than connecting my global family with this beautiful country and the children who need our help most,” Madonna wrote on Facebook.

The fundraising is in partnership with the leading social networking site, Facebook and Ripple, a global payments company. The fundraiser raised more than USD 10,000 24 hours after she made her intentions public, and is expected to reach the required figure before her 60th birthday.

“Every dollar raised will go directly to meals, schools, uniforms and healthcare. I want to come together with my friends, fans and supporters to change the lives of Malawian children and let them know they are nurtured, protected and loved. Through their generous match, Ripple is doubling the impact each individual can make,” she added.

The Queen of Pop as she is fondly referred to by music enthusiasts has also carved a niche for herself as a philanthropist reaching out to the disadvantaged and underprivileged children across Africa, especially in Malawi. She has etched her name in the heart of Malawians with her philanthropic work in the country.

On Madonna and Malawi…

In 2006, Madonna started her charity organization, Raising Malawi. Since then, Madonna has forged ahead in her quest by investing in orphans and the less privileged in remote villages of Malawi. She has contributed immensely to the growth of the country through donations to education, health and community development.

Malawi has struggled with a drooping economy and seen many of its sectors crumble due to the corruption of the previous government. With a population of less than 17 million, Malawi is one of the underdeveloped economies in Africa with more than 50 percent of its citizens absorbed in poverty.

The country was ripped down by the outbreak of the viral disease, HIV/AIDs in the 2000s, which has made millions of young children orphans. No doubt, the intervention of the singer means a lot to the country at a difficult.

The American singer is the foster mother of four Malawi children. In 2017, a Malawian court granted Madonna permission to adopt twins girls seven years after she adopted two other children.

In the last few years, Madonna’s philanthropic records are gradually matching her groundbreaking music career which saw become as the best-selling female recording artist of all time. In 2012, she launched a partnership between Raising Malawi and a global nonprofit buildOn to transform Malawi education sector. A partnership which has yielded great impact in Malawi through the provision of 14 new schools and giving our of scholarship to 500 young girls.

In 2017, Madonna’s Raising Malawi also formally open the Mercy James Institute of Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care (MJC) — a state-of-the-art pediatric surgery and intensive care unit and the first of its kind in Malawi at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

The singer who released her 13th studio – Rebel Heart- album in 2015 will be celebrating her 60th birthday with young children in Malawi on August 16. According to her, we have made great progress and I will not stop fighting until every child is able to go to school. Through partnering with local and non governmental organisations, she has impacted over 10,000 children in Malawi.
