The prestigious Glo-CAF Awards which is dedicated to the recognition and acknowledgement of Africa’s finest performers hosted by the football governing body, Confederation of African Football, has been scheduled to hold on January 8, 2015.

The news was made via an official statement from CAF. The statement also confirmed Lagos, Nigeria as the host city for the 2014 Glo-CAF awards.  The awards ceremony is a valuable asset owned by CAF and has been sponsored by Nigerian telecommunication giants, Globacom, since 2005.

The keenly anticipated event is most notable for the announcement of the ‘African Footballer of the Year’ award- a tag set aside to honour Africa’s best footballer in the year under review.

Current African Footballer of the Year, Yaya Toure is favourite to retain his crown after successive wins in 2011, 2012 and 2013. A fourth win will put him on the same status with Cameroon and Everton striker Samuel Eto’o as the player with the most African Footballer of the Year awards after winning it four times in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009.

The gala event will also see other players, officials and personnel honoured for distinguishing performances and achievements.

Asides the African Footballer of the Year category, other individual categories for which awards will be given are ‘African Player of The Year (Based in Africa)’,  ‘Women’s Player of The Year’, ‘African Legend’, ‘Youth Player of the Year’, ‘Most Promising Talent’, ‘Referee of the Year’ and ‘Coach of The Year’.

Also to be recognized will be national teams such as ‘Women’s National Team of The Year’ and ‘National Team of The Year’.  There will be awards for ‘Club of The Year’ and ‘CAF Fair Play Award’ as well.

CAF have also introduced two new categories that will be decided by votes from the public, they are: Goal of the Year and Save of the Year.

Another highly anticipated highlight of the event will be the announcement of the African XI of the Year- a team of Africa’s best footballers.

Lagos will be hosting the event for the third time in history as it first successfully hosted the gala event in 2008 and again in 2013. Still, Lagos is second to Accra as the city with most hosting rights as it has hosted the event on four different occasions in 2006, 2009 and then back to back in 2011 and 2012. Abuja (2005), Cairo (2010) and Lome (2007) have all hosted one each.
