Africa’s leading online retailer Jumia today announced its expansion to Cameroon building on the back of its recent successful launches in Uganda and Ghana.

The flagship internet company of Africa Internet Holding, Jumia’s expansion to Cameroon takes the number of countries where it has a presence to nine. The company, in a statement sent to Ventures Africa, described Cameroon’s strong purchasing power and interest in consumer goods as the reasons for its expansion. It cited the Central African Country’s GDP of $26 billion and economic growth rate of 4.7 percent which makes it Africa’s 13th-largest economy.

Although Cameroon has a low internet penetration, the e-commerce site points to its steady growth, inspired by the rise in Smartphone use, as making now the ideal time for online retail to establish itself.

Jumia, first launched in 2012, has a thriving e-commerce brand in Nigeria, its largest market. It is also present in Ivory Coast, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana and Uganda, as well as launching a site in the UK. With its own warehouses and delivery teams, as well as a variety of payment options including cash on delivery, credit card and mobile money, it has adapted the global megatrend for African consumers and won the trust of a large and constantly growing customer base.

Christina Hawley, Jumia’s Managing Director for New Countries described the expansion as “another exciting step for Jumia. “We are confident that Cameroonians will embrace the opportunity to shop easily and conveniently online, and are committed to maintaining our high standards of security, great value and fantastic service as we continue to expand across the continent”, he added.

Jumia is among a network of internet companies owned by Africa Internet Holding which include Kaymu, Hellofood, Lamudi, Carmudi, Zando, Jovago, Lendico and Easy Taxi.
