American President Donald Trump earlier this week confirmed the death of Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a nighttime raid by the United States Special Forces deep in northwest Syria.
In a televised address from the White House, Trump said that U.S. forces killed a “large number” of IS militants during the raid which culminated in cornering Baghdadi in a tunnel, where he set off a suicide vest.
“He ignited his vest, killing himself. He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming all the way,” the president said, adding that three of Baghdadi’s children also died in the blast.
The operation killed a total of nine people according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. That included an IS senior leader called Abu Yamaan as well as a child and two women.
