On Monday, 21st March 2017, the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmud Yakubu, during the commission’s first quarterly consultative meeting with the media in Abuja confirmed that continuous voter registration will begin across the country in April.

“Election is essentially based on a number of parameters. After the 2015 general elections, we are compelled to see if we can clean up the voter register. For instance, we have to remove the names of the deceased from the register. With 70 million registered voters at the moment, and by the time we do the Continuous Voter Registration, fixed for April, the number will definitely be higher,” Prof. Yakubu, said.

According to Yakubu, the commission was planning to conduct 1,560 elections in 2019. Therefore, the leadership of the commission had directed the resident electoral commissioners and the administrative secretaries to commence the immediate distribution of the uncollected PVCs in the states.
