In an unprecedented move, leading Nigerian lender, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) Plc. has launched a ‘Social Banking’ service on Facebook, allowing the public to open bank accounts and get customer service support on the platform.

According to GTB’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Segun Agbaje, the new service which is the first of its kind in the Nigerian banking industry, will enable the lender engage customers where they work, live or play.

He explained that the ‘Social Banking’ service would enable persons on social networks like Facebook commence a banking relationship and perform transactions 24/7, safely and conveniently, without having to leave the platform.

“This novel service presently allows people open GTBank accounts and get customer service support on Facebook and in a couple of weeks we will introduce new service options that include money transfers, airtime purchases and bills payments,” he said.

GTB is not new to internet-based banking service. The bank recently introduced GTBank Mobile Money, a highly secure application that allows customers and non GTBank customers perform transfers and payments from their mobile phones to any mobile phone subscriber within the country.

Established in 1990, GTB is today recognised as one of the most innovative and service focused banks in the Nigerian financial market space.
