Since the arrests of FIFA officials in the early hours of May 27, the world football governing body has faced a continuing sandal over its conduct and dealings in the last decades. One of the dealings that has been spotlighted is the World Cup host selection process with the FIFA 2018 and 2022 World Cups particularly coming under focus.
However, as Chuck Blazer, a former high ranking CONCACAF official, alluded to some illegalities with the process of awarding the 1998 World Cup, Morocco have been drawn into an embarrassing web of bribery and financial inducement for World Cup hosting votes.
In response, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has firmly denied the allegations of bribery by their country in exchange for votes from FIFA executives to win hosting rights of the the 1998 World Cup despite Blazer’s claims that a member of the Moroccan delegation offered a bribe of $1 million.
A statement from Morocco read: “Morocco denies categorically these slanderous accusations against the officials of the country’s organising committee of the 1998 World Cup. Regarding its efforts, Morocco deserved better treatment instead of tendentious and unfounded rumours.”
The FIFA official involved in the bribery scandal appears to Jack Warner of the CONCACAF but he has bullishly denied all claims describing them as the result of a witch-hunt.
Morocco’s bid for the 1998 World Cup ultimately proved fruitless as the hosting rights were awarded to France. Crucially though, the 2010 World Cup which Morocco also bid to host has been mentioned severally as being one of the World Cup events with questionable host selection procedures.
