Yesterday, the Federal Road Safety Commission’s mobile court in Port Harcourt, sanctioned about 15 commercial buses for failing to comply with the deadline to install speed limit devices in their vehicles. According to Mr Ayodele Kumapayi, the Sector Commander of the commission in Rivers State, Thursday was the day set aside by the national headquarters of the commission to ascertain compliance by commercial vehicles with the deadline for installation of the speed limit device.

According to Ayodele, the sector in the state would continue to monitor commercial vehicles to ensure compliance, stressing that the speed limit device was to save lives of travellers in commercial vehicles on highways.

The essence of the implementation of this Speed Limiting Device by the Federal Road Safety is to ensure that all commercial vehicle don’t exceed 90 kilometers per hour as this will help reduce impact in any case of accident that might happen on highways. Some of the defaulters arrested were fined 3,000 naira with a stern warning to install the device for their own safety and that of other travellers.
