On Thursday, 8th December 2016, in a meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria and other member states of ECOWAS stated that a deadline for the adoption of a single currency for the region is fast approaching.

“The deadline for the adoption of single currency is fast approaching; this committee should set an agenda to look into the progress made so far and identify challenges that may hinder its smooth operation,” said Mr Mamadou Traore, ECOWAS Commissioner, Macroeconomic Policy and Economic Research.

This decision is to strengthen the sub-regional economic integration and development and could also be implemented through the economic policies of member states. Hence, member states should regularly update their databases on measures that drive economic growth in their countries.
