The island of Madagascar is located between the Indian Ocean and the Mozambican channel – 250 miles off the eastern coast of Africa across the Mozambique Channel, just south of the equator. Over 1000 miles (1580 km) long and 350 miles (570 km) wide, Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island after Groeland, New Guinea and Bornéo. The country, which has peoples of Asian, African and Indonesian decent, is crossed over by the Tropic of Capricorn next to the town of Toliara and separated from Gondwane.
