Who says consistency does not have rewards? Well, Nigerian international and Chelsea of England midfield linchpin John Mikel Obi is set to reap the rewards of consistency as the club is set to offer him a 5 year contract extension.

A Nigerian sports daily quotes the agent of the Nigerian international, John Ola Shittu as saying Mikel is being rewarded by the European Champions for his consistency.

Mikel has been an integral part of the Blues campaign this year, precisely since the sack of former Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas. The Nigerian who seemed to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge last season has since found his rhythm under new manager Roberto Di Matteo. He was instrumental in the club’s double haul of FA Cup and UEFA Champions League wins. This season, the former Lyn of Oslo player has continued his fine form helping the Blues to sit top of the standings in the English Premier League.

This has now resulted in Chelsea offering him an improved contract with his agent Shittu quoted as saying it is a 5 year deal.

“Mikel will soon sign a new five year deal with Chelsea,” said Shittu. “He will sign a new five year contract with obviously an improved salary. We are just about finishing the details of the deal and it can be announced any time soon by the club.”

Mikel is currently on an 80, 000 pounds a week deal but Shittu refused to disclose the financial details of his new contract.

Mikel signed for Chelsea in 2006 for 15 million pounds ($24 million) after a long transfer saga which saw him reportedly sign for rivals Manchester United. He has won many titles with the Blues including last season’s UEFA Champions League as well as the league and cup double in 2010.
