Gold miner, Centamin, on Tuesday said gold production at its flagship project, Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt, had surged almost 40 percent in the third quarter of this year.

Total gold production, it said in a statement, had soared to 84.757 ounces during the period under review, bringing year-to-date delivery to 265,397 ounces.

Centamin, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE), released this statement on Tuesday as hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood groups sang outside Cairo University.

They defied Egypt’s army-supported rulers in spite of fatal battles with armed forces 48 hours earlier.

Backers of the ousted president Mohamed Morsi had called on university students to demonstrate against the armed forces after the Sunday violence.

The numbers of the dead people from Sunday’s fighting increased to 57, according to state media.

The Sukari Gold Mine is situated in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. This area is 700km from Cairo and 25km inland from the Red Sea.

Production on this mine started in June 2009, making Sukari the first modern mine in Egypt.

The company said open pit total material movement during the quarter was reduced by 5 percent from the second quarter of this year to 10,506kt.
