African football governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce the hosts for the continent’s premier football event, the African Cup of Nations for both the 2019 and 2021 editions.

The announcement will be made at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa tomorrow in line with CAF’s scheduling protocol.

In January 2014, the CAF Executive Committee announced that there were six official candidates for the 2019 edition- Algeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, DR Congo and Zambia. However, in July 2014, DR Congo withdrew its hosting candidacy due to concerns over insecurity. Guinea, before bidding solo, had been part of an ambitious four-way joint hosting bid with three other nations- Guinea-Bissau, Liberia and Sierra Leone. As it stands, one host nation will be selected from the pool of five solo hosting bids from Algeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Zambia.

A similar pool of nations are also in the run to host the 2021 edition with all three shortlisted host nations also bidding to host the 2019 edition. The CAF Executive Committee has since confirmed that Algeria, Guinea and Ivory Coast are the shortlisted nations hoping to host the 33rd AFCON.

CAF is expected to also make some announcements as regards the situation of the 2017 AFCON which has become available for prospective host nations to bid for once again after Libya announced that it was relinquishing its hosting rights to the event.

The AFCON is CAF’s biggest asset and has attracted corporate association from brands such as Orange, Pepsi, Standard Bank, Nasuba and Samsung.
