On Wednesday, Sudanese police forces fired tear gas at about 300 Sudanese protesters demonstrating against a government decision to cut fuel subsidies. Dozens of people were killed at the end of the crushed demonstration.

According to an AFP report, Sudanese authorities cracked down on the protests in an attempt to prevent a repeat of the deadly unrest that came after a previous round of subsidy cuts in 2013.

Several opposition groups called for a three-day nationwide strike earlier this week, which received a mixed response.
