President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the investigation of some officials in his government. The investigation into allegations of corruption is expected to focus on Ibrahim Magu, the acting chairman of the EFCC, and Babachir Lawal, the secretary to the government.

Ibrahim Magu is being accused of accepting a house from a retired air force general; he has strongly denied this charge. Babachir Lawal, in a report last week, was accused by the Senate of diverting $800,000 of government money that should have been used to rebuild areas in the northeast destroyed by Boko Haram. He, too, denied this.

Garba Shehu, the presidency’s spokesman said, “The attention of the presidency has been drawn to a number of reports in the media, in which various accusations of corruption have been levelled against some top officials in the administration.

In that regard, President Buhari has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to investigate the involvement of any top government officials accused of any wrong-doing. If any of them are liable they will not escape prosecution.”
