Who is Buhari?

Quite frankly, this is a rhetorical question. I know you know who Buhari is. So I’ll just get right to it.

Sure, I do. That dog right? That Igbo man’s dog

Huh? Noooo…Not the dog. How dare you?

Buhari is Nigeria’s 73-year-old President, a renowned agent of change, enemy of everything “kworrupt,” protector of the weak, and defender of the Nigerian universe. He is the hero the dog was named after, he is NOT the dog.

Okay then, sorry for the mix up. It was an honest mistake. Why are we talking about Buhari today?

Kindly refer to the title above.

I don’t quite get your title, what are you talking about?

On Monday, eight people (students) were burnt to death by a mob at a Polytechnic in Zamfara state.

What?! Why?

It is said that a male student (most likely a non-Muslim) blasphemed against Prophet Muhammad. As the story goes, the young man was engaged in a word battle with his Muslim friend when he committed blasphemy. What was said? We don’t know, and we’ll never know. But shortly after, a mob was hot on his heels. They gained entrance into the house where he was hiding to avoid being lynched and set it ablaze with seven other persons in it.

WOAH!!! This is such an upsetting news. Why would people do that?

Because it’s Nigeria.

So? What does that even mean?

Because a culture of impunity persists in Nigeria.

Yeah, so I’ve observed. But why?

Because we have severely weak social institutions.

But that is why you have Buhari right? Your change agent, he’ll fix everything.

Did you just say he will? He already has done that. He’s swiftly came out to condemn the killings. He was shocked and deeply concerned. He even prayed for the families of the deceased and promised a better Nigeria.

#IssueResolved

I’m sorry, but I don’t follow. How does this translate to fixing the issue?

Are you a learner? That is one of the ways to solve problems in this country, and everyone knows that. Nigerians know that whenever calamity strikes, which is ever so often these days, all the government has to do is condemnit, and that’s it. The president knows that if he doesn’t condemn this event, Nigerians wont let me him eat his tuwo shinkafa and drink his kunu in peace, and so he has fulfilled all righteousness by condemning and reinforcing promises.

Actually, Buhari should be lauded. This is about the fastest time he has proceeded to condemn an unlawful killing. In the past, we would have to wait a day or two and call him out on social media before he moves to condemn, or probably send his boy, Osinbanjo to do the condemning. But Nigerians didn’t have to do that this time; the roasting happened on Monday, the President condemns on Tuesday – #Progress #Change

See?

By the way, ignore the second paragraph, I don’t get  why people are so hard to please. Condemnation is condemnation, be it on Twitter or elsewhere. On a second thought, lets really ponder on that paragraph. What does it say about us, the fact that all we seem to be waiting for is the president’s condemnation? I guess if his media team releases a statement, that will make everything better? No?

Oh! I almost forgot this other paragraph:
